In 2017, the City of Charlotte funded a new master plan and conceptual design for Discovery Place Science. Jenkins Peer Architects as architect-of-record and Diller Scofidio + Renfro as design architect were selected to analyze the campus and identify the needs of Discovery Place Science in its continuing mission to provide educational, inspiring and immersive experiences involving science and technology to all visitors. The Master Plan included an existing facility assessment for the three buildings on the campus.
Located in the Fourth Ward of Charlotte’s ‘Uptown’ city center, Discovery Place Science will anchor the future mixed-use development master plan (The North Tryon Vision Plan) of the surrounding district and provide a link between the nearby neighborhoods and the City Center. In the heart of a city, Discovery Place Science will converge science, technology, and design with community. As reimagined by the JPA team, the new Discovery Place Science will be a living laboratory of inspiration, curiosity, exploration, and self-discovery, a place for visitors of all ages and interests that is accessible, approachable, and easily updatable.
